When Aliko Dangote was rated last year at a mere $2.1 by Forbes Magazine, our dear Alhaji hit the roof. He was even more pained by the fact that an "ordinary" woman named Oprah Winfrey was rated above him as the Richest Black Person.
In an interview back then, Dangote insisted he was grossly undervalued by the folks at Forbes even as some people thought he was bluffing. However, this year, Forbes have truly recognized his worth as Alhaji Aliko Dangote has shot up the rich list so rapidly that Oprah is beginning to look like a welfare case alongside him. Also in that one giant leap (up to $13.8 billion) he has leapfrogged such heavyweights as Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg ($13.5), Roman Abramovich ($13.4 ), Paul Allen ($13 Billion), Rupert Murdoch ($7.6 Billion), Giorgio Armani, Henry Ross Perot Sr, etc. Interestingly, Femi Otedola, reputed to be at daggers-drawn with Dangote, has dropped off the list no thanks (some say) to Dangote's sabotage of his company's shares. Mourn ye not because the Glo , ETB and Conoil boss, Mike Adenuga Jr. made the list with $2 billion under his belt.
Forbes have stylishly acknowledged their error on Dangote thus:
Aliko Dangote: Fortune is up $11.7 billion
Rank: 51; Net Worth: $13.8 billion
The Nigerian businessman’s fortune surged 557% in the past year, making him the world’s biggest gainer in percentage terms and Africa’s richest individual for the first time. The catalyst was listing Dangote Cement, which integrated his investments across Africa with his previously public Benue Cement; it now accounts for a quarter of the Nigeria Stock Exchange’s total market cap. Already the continent’s biggest cement maker, he has plants under construction in Zambia, Tanzania, Congo and Ethiopa and is building cement terminals in Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Liberia, among other places.
